Milpitas
The City of Milpitas, which means “little cornfields”, is located in the northeastern part of Santa Clara County accessible by freeways 680, 880, and 237. To the south is the Berryessa or North Valley region of San Jose. To the east lies the Calaveras Reservoir. West of Milpitas is the Alviso area of San Jose and a national wildlife refuge. North of Milpitas is the city of Fremont in Alameda County. The population is over 65,000 in this rapidly growing suburb. Traditionally an industrial area, Milpitas was incorporated in 1954 and has been growing steadily by adding many ethnic families and high tech professionals seeking less expensive housing than in other parts of the Valley. Crime is low in the area and schools are above average for the State. High tech industries and other businesses have relocated to the area. The Great Mall outlet center and movie complex is one venue for commerce and entertainment in the area. There is a mixture of housing available from apartment complexes to newer and older areas of homes, including some expensive homes in the hills. The old industrial section, which used to house a Ford motor plant, now houses a jail. There are many parks, recreational facilities and gathering places available to the community. Highway construction has been improving the commute. The location, close enough to San Jose International Airport and the high tech job centers in the Valley, while offering comparably lower homes prices, makes this growing suburb an attractive location for many homebuyers and businesses.
