Gilroy

The City of Gilroy is located in the southernmost part of Santa Clara County bordering San Benito County. It is accessible by HWY 101 and HWY 152 and located south of Morgan Hill and San Martin. Gilroy was incorporated in 1870 and has been known for various types of farming throughout its history as an agricultural community. Periods of tobacco, cheese and orchard farming have been replaced by Gilroy’s current crown as Garlic Capital of the World. Gilroy is a residential area that is home to some businesses as well. The Outlets at Gilroy is a large outlet center for shopping. The area has many parks, golf courses and open space as well as other recreational facilities. The location is a long commute from the job centers in the Valley, however it is a short drive from the Monterey Bay. The affordable housing compared with other areas of the county makes Gilroy an attractive location for many homebuyers. The population is over 40,000, which is evenly split between Hispanics and Caucasians. Gilroy has mountains to the east and west which puts it between two fault zones.
